We never actually congratulated Barack Obama for his election at the beggining of the month. I'm sure everybody (except maybe for McCain) is very thrilled with the new american president. We at RockYourEnglish.Blogspot.com are 100% confident that Obama it is going to lead America to a brighter future... However we must not forget the best supporter of Obama campaign. George W. Bush was one of the dumbest presidents US ever had and the actions of his 8-year government definetely contribute greatly for Obama's victory. Thank you Mr. Bush and Good bye, for good! This song is for you!

"Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the 1991 death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a 53rd-story window in his mother's friend's New York City condominium. By all accounts, the death was simply a tragic accident, and Clapton was distraught for months afterwards. This song is one of Clapton's most successful, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S. The song also spent three weeks at #1 on the American adult contemporary chart in 1992.

Clapton wrote the song with Will Jennings, who was reluctant at first to help him with such a personal song. The song was initially featured on the soundtrack to the film Rush, and it won three Grammy awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Male Pop Vocal Performancein 1993. It was also included on Clapton's Grammy award-winning album, Unplugged. It is #353 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs.Clapton stopped playing it in 2004, as well as the song "My Father's Eyes":

"I didn't feel the loss anymore, which is so much a part of performing those songs. I really have to connect with the feelings that were there when I wrote them. They're kind of gone and I really don't want them to come back, particularly. My life is different now. They probably just need a rest and maybe I'll introduce them for a much more detached point of view."

Learn the Lingo: Conditional 1 (Would Be x Will Be)

This is the first lesson on conditional terms. There are many conditional situations. One of them can be presented as well as distringuished by using Would be and Will Be. The difference between them is quite simple. 

A) You will use "Would be" in situations when you MAY DO something or WOULD HAVE DONE something in the case a situation happens or would have happened. For example:

1. I would go with Jane if she asks me.
2. Robert would not be late if he woke up in time.

B) You will use "Will be" in situations when you WILL DO something in the case a situation happens. For example:

1.  I will be stronger if a eat healthy food.
2. She will not win the game if she does not practice

Note: Note the use of "IF" in every conditioning sentence is required.

There are many other ways of conditioning in several time tenses. Sitck with these ones for now for there will be much more in the future. And remember: You WILL learn better if you keep studying hard.

Aprendendo a Língua: Condicional (Iria e Irei)

Esta é a primeira aula sobre termos condicionais. Existem muitas situações de condição. Uma delas pode ser representada assim como distinguida pela utilização de termos como Iria e Irei. A diferença entre eles é bem simples.

A) Você vai usar "Iria" em situações em que você PODE FAZER alguma coisa ou PODERIA TER FEITO alguma coisa no caso de uma situação acontecer ou ter acontecido. Por exemplo:

1. Eu iria com a Jane se ela me chamar.

2. Robert não estaria atrasado se estivesse acordado no horário

B) Você vai usar "Irei" em situações em que você PODE FAZER alguma coisa no caso de uma situação acontecer. Por exemplo:

1. Eu ficarei mais forte se eu comer comida saudável.

2. Ela não ganhará o jogo se ela não praticar.
Nota: Note que o suso do "SE" é necessário em todas as condições.

Existem muitas outras formas de condições nosvários tempos verbais. Se atenham a esses dois por enquanto pois haverão muito mais no futuro. E lembrem: Você IRÁ aprender melhor se você continuar estudando bastante.

Get to know the band...

The members of The Cure first started releasing music in the late 1970s. Their first album, Three Imaginary Boys (1979), and early singles placed them as part of the post-punk and New Wavemovements that had sprung up in the wake of the punk rock revolution in the United Kingdom. During the early 1980s the band's increasingly dark and tormented music helped form the gothic rock genre. After the release of Pornography (1982), the band's future was uncertain and frontman Robert Smith was keen to move past the gloomy reputation his band had cultivated. With the 1982 single "Let's Go to Bed" Smith began to inject more of a pop sensibility into the band's music. The Cure's popularity increased as the decade wore on, especially in the United States, where the songs "Just Like Heaven", "Lovesong" and "Friday I'm in Love" entered theBillboard Top 40 charts. By the start of the 1990s, The Cure were one of the most popularalternative rock bands in the world and have sold an estimated 27 million albums as of 2004.[1]The Cure have released thirteen studio albums and over thirty singles over the course of their career.

Learn the Lingo: Metaphor   

As we have discussed before, english is fllied with metaphors. Some are easy to understand as well other are a little more complicated. This week’s song start by using two distinct metaphors on the two first sentences:    

“I don't care if monday's blue / Tuesday's grey and wednesday too” 

The words “Blue” and “Grey” are originally attribute to colors, however in the context of the song they are related to a person’s mood, feelings. “Blue” is always linked to something very sad, the makes you feel down. So, if you say “I’m blue” it means you are sad, feeling emotionally bad. The musical genre “Blues” uses this metaphor to express its mellow, originally sad themes on its songs. Other examples of common metaphors in English are:

- I Feel Great --> I am very good 

- You are my sunshine --> You are the reason of my happiness 

- She is sweet --> She is adorable   

Metaphor can also be associated to slangs and specific cultures.   

Aprendendo a lingua: Metáfora 

Como já falamos anteriormente, inglês é repleto de metáforas. Algumas são fáceis compreender assim como outras são mais complicadas. A música dessa semana começa usando duas diferentes metáforas das duas últimas frases.   

As palavras “Blue”(Azul) e “Grey”(Cinza) são originalmente atribuídas a cores, no entanto no contexto da música elas está relacionadas ao estado de espírito de uma pessoas, seus sentimentos. “Blue” está sempre ligado a algo muito triste, que faz você se sentir pra baixo. Então, se você fala “I’m blue” significa que você está triste, se sentindo emocionalmente mal. O gênero musical “Blues” utiliza essa metáfora para expressar os temas tristes e sentimentais de suas músicas. Outros exemplos comuns de metáforas em inglês são: 

- I Feel Great --> I am very good (Eu me sinto grande / Eu estou muito bem) 

- You are my sunshine --> You are the reason of my happiness (Você é meu raio de sol / Você é a razão da minha alegria) 

- She is sweet --> She is adorable (Ela é doce / Ela é adorável)   

As metáforas também podem estar associadas a gírias e culturas especificas.         

Sobre Traduções

Este tópico eu farei somente em português para que fique claro a questão das traduções. Ao longo das semanas vocês começarão a perceber que as traduções das letras geram frases que podem parecer sem sentido. Isso se deve a um conjunto complexo de fatores. Devemos considerar a questão poética da narratica da música que taz elementos característicos de uma cultura que não é a nossa, assim nas letras de músicas de cantores/bandas americanas sempre vão existir inserções metafóricas que podem fazer pouco ou nenhum sentido para nós. Por causa desse fator quero deixa um alerta e isso é realmente importante: A tradução auxilia na compreensão de textos, no acúmulo de vaocábulos e aumenta a sensação confiança no aprendizado, mas o processo de aprendizado baseado SOMENTE em tradução vai impedir que você possa entender expressões mais complexas, como as expressões idiomáticas, que envolvem uma granced carga cultural e cujo sentido literal da tradução raramente refletirá o sentido real da frase. 

Algumas situações podem ser facilmente compreendidas como por exemplo na palavra "Airhead", cuja a tradução literal é cabeça de vento que tanto na Brasil quanto nos Estados Unidos tem o mesmo sentido, de uma pessoa tola, burra, idiota. Já outras expressões farão pouco ou nenhum sentido para n´so como no caso do título da múscia de Alanis Morissette "Head Over Feet" cuja tradução literal seria "Cabeça sobre os Pés" que na nossa cultura não significa muita coisa, mas que na verdade é uma variação poética da expressão "Head Over Heels" que significa "Intensamente" quando associada a um contexto amoroso, ou seja, "Intensamente Apaixonado". Ex: I am head over heels in love with you // Estou intensamente/perdidamente apaixonado por você.

Espero que o comentário seja o suficiente para que todos possam ter cuidado ao confiar unicamente na tradução quando estiverem estudando. Lembro que estaremos sempre discutindo expressões idiomáticas que nos levem a entender o contexto em que termos como esse sejam utilizados.

Learn the Lingo: Contraction

By learning this song we can understand the various ways of contraction with the use of the Apostrophe. The apostrophe is used to indicate omission of some letters in a word. See the examples extracted from the lyrics:
- It's --> It is
- I've --> I have
- I'd --> I would
- Cos' --> Couse or Becouse
- Wouldn't --> Would not


We have three types of use among these examples:

1. Contraction of the verb:
You can contract the verb in an afirmative phrase. Ex.:
a) He is very tall --> He's very tall
b) They are so cool --> They're so cool
c) I have came do far --> I've came so far
d) I would love to talk to you --> I'd love to talk to you

2. Contraction on a negative statement:
You can use the contracted form when you have a phrase or question on a negative form. Ex:
a) You are not going out tonight --> You aren't going out tonight
b) We have not played football --> We haven't played football
c) Are you not tired? --> Aren't you tired?
d) Is Mark not travelling today? --> Isn't Mark travelling today?

3. Contraction of words
Some words can be contracted in a non-formal situation. Ex.:
a) Swimming --> Swimmin'
b) Becouse --> Cos'
c) Government --> Gov't

ATTENTION!!!!!
The contraction for "I/You/He/She/They would" and "I/You/He/She/They had" is the same, you will only know the difference due to the content of the phrase. Ex.:

a) I would love to go out with Jane --> I'd love to go out with Jane
He had seen a lion in the Zoo --> He'd seen a lion in the Zoo
